Florida is a hugely popular destination for family vacations, but that’s usually thanks to Walt Disney World, Everglades National Park or Universal Studios. But, let us tell you, heading out onto the water for a day of fishing can be extremely popular. If the relaxation of riding the waves don’t keep your children occupied, then the thrill of reeling in a lively fish certainly will.
With that being said, it’s imperative that you identify a terrific location before the big day of fishing arrives. There would be nothing worse than gliding around an empty lake with your kids screaming of boredom. Instead, you want them pulling in a gorgeous largemouth bass, or tussling with an energetic trout.

- Dog Island Reef
This stretch of shallows contains an abundance of fresh fish, which makes it perfect for shore fishing. If you ever want a break from fishing throughout the day, you could always lie back and relax on the soft white sand. Locals suggest using live shrimp to attract fish, such as pompano and Spanish mackerel. But, be aware, Dog Island Reef is also home to sharks!
- Lake Okeechobee
Everglades National Park is one hell of an attraction, but right beside it you’ll find Lake Okeechobee. Now, don’t worry, it won’t be hard to spot, considering it’s the biggest lake in Florida and the second-biggest in the whole of the US. Within the 500,000-acres of lake, you’ll come across a variety of fish, but it’s best known for the bass. Oh, and if you get hungry, just head out to one of the local Cuban restaurants.
- Tampa Bay
If you’re familiar with Florida, then you’ll definitely be familiar with the exotic Tampa Bay region. Luckily for you, there’s one that one hotspot in the area, and it all depends on whether you want to fish from the shore or from a boat. If you go with the shore option, you can begin at Ballast Point Park and expect to catch pompano, redfish and snook. If you go the boat route, park up under one of the bridges and sit tight.
- Lake Tohopekaliga
Although Lake Tohopekaliga is its formal name, it’s actually split into two halves – West Lake Toho and East Lake Toho. It’s based in touching distance of Orlando, so there’ll be plenty to do nearby. As for fishing, it’s extremely renowned for offering humungous lake bass, as well as black crappie. Locals recommend using golden shiners or spinnerbaits as the lure.
- Key West
With Key West, you won’t be short of options with what you could potentially catch, which is no surprise considering the region spans for 125-miles. If you’re deep-sea fishing, you’ll find lovely tarpon and gigantic swordfish. If you’re on the shore, expect to rake in some snook or redfish. If you’re trailing through the shallow waters, you’ll attract permit and grey ghost bonefish.
