It takes a ton of effort to make sure that your boat is in pristine condition. Every time you go boating, you expose it to harmful UV rays emitted by the Sun. The boat is also affected by the mineral deposits, salt, and sediments in the water. There’s no such boat that is capable of withstanding the damage inflicted by natural elements unless the owner keeps detailing the boat at regular intervals.

You must clean your boat first both before & after you go on your next boating adventure if you intend to keep using it for a long time. In order to derive maximum benefits from the boat and for showcasing its shiny curvaceous lines, we recommend waxing the superstructure, deck, and fiberglass hull at regular intervals.

To Wax or Not to Wax

Unless you’ve avidly researched everything there is to know about DIY boat detailing, you’re unlikely to know important things like when you should be waxing your boat & the waxing products to be used. However, there are a number of boat detailing articles and guides available online that can provide you with handy tips regarding when and how you should wax, detail, and wash your boat.

It can be tricky to find a reliable answer regarding how often to wax your boat.

There are no hard & fast rules regarding this. You have to consider several factors, including the conditions that your boat typically sails in and the frequency of your usage.

However, the rule of thumb is that you need to carry out boat waxing at least 2 times a year.

In case you’d like to protect your boat against chalking, fading, or hazing due to constant exposure to sunlight, there are 3 important steps you must take here.

  • Give your boat a thorough cleaning: To start waxing your boat properly, you need to ensure that it’s perfectly clean. By thoroughly rinsing the boat with fresh water, you can make sure that it looks good. However, if you’d like to wax the boat and help it retain its fresh look, it is important to be more meticulous with your cleaning. Use a commercial marine soap or cleaning agent for eliminating mold stains, grease, marine growth, crud, mineral, and salt deposits on the boat.

  • Polish your boat: The gel coat won’t be clean enough unless you use a protectant to buff & polish it. Gel coat is the invisible thick layer over your fiberglass hull’s paint job, which can protect it from scrapes, nicks, and the damaging rays of the Sun.

  • Waxing: Go for natural waxing substances or polymer sealants for ensuring your boat retains its good looks for a long time. Natural wax can give it a healthier, darker, and deeper shine and take its looks to the next level. A polymer sealant is has plasticized, meaning it can help retain your boat’s looks for a longer period of time and reduce the number of times you need to wax your boat.
