Ready to book the day off work, gather all of your fishing gear and cast out your line in hope of catching a whopper? Then you may want to make the most out of your day by heading to one of the best fishing spots in America. Of course, there are hundreds of awesome areas to catch fish, but we’ve put together our – and millions of others – favourites…

1. Kona, Hawaii

Just imagine absorbing the breath-taking views off the western shore while tuna, ono and mahi mahi hook onto your line from aboard a charter boat. Or, you may want to push your adrenaline by targeting big-game bottom fish and hefty sharks from the waters that stretch down 6,000 feet.

2. Florida Keys, Florida

This destination is up there with the most magical in the country, simply because the patch of Atlantic Ocean within the warm Gulf Stream is home to swordfish, sailfish and blue & white marlin. Although, if angling is just your hobby, you may find it better to pull permit, bonefish, snook or redfish from the “backcountry”.

3. Bighorn River, Montana

The only downside to this destination is that it tends to get extremely crowded, because public spots on the river are few and far between. But, if you embrace the high population, you can fuel your love for fly fishing. The river boasts mainly of brown trout, but if you’re lucky, you may come across a rainbow.

4. Outer Banks, North Carolina

You see, the amazing aspect of Outer Banks, is that you don’t need to commit to choosing a type of angling for your trip. You can head there, and choose from pier fishing, braking fishing, fly fishing and inshore charter fishing; whichever takes your fancy. Expect to find sea bass, flounder and trout here.

5. Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

Not only does this destination provide you with stunning views, it also offers variety. Either whisk off on a charter boat to reel in false albacore and bonito, or opt for surfcasting and draw in striped bass from your pole.

6. Chesapeake Bay, Maryland

Looking to pull in an abundance of striped bass? Then this may be the perfect option. More than 70% of the striped bass from the Atlantic Coast derive from this bay, and that equates to happy fishing. You aren’t limited to just those, though; you can also find speckled trout, flounder, croaker and bluefish.

7. Kobuk River, Alaska

Ahhh, Alaska… home to the great outdoors, and specifically the Kobuk River which stretches 200 miles. You may think you’re having an easy ride when you come across lake trout, arctic grayling, arctic char and chum salmon. But, wait till you encounter the strong, fast and determined sheefish – that’s a challenge for any angler.

8. Thousand Islands, New York

Located on the eastern side of Lake Ontario deep in the heart of St. Lawrence River, you’ll find an array of tiny islands. Within the Thousand Islands, you’ll discover a ton of freshwater fish, such as salmon, bass, walleye, muskellunge and northern pike. If you’re a beginner, try out one of the awesome guided tours.
