The Dorado fish has several other names depending on the place. They are also known as mahi-mahi or dolphin fish. They have a remarkable body color and are delicious. They are found in large numbers in the tropics and grow at a tremendous rate. A fully grown mahi-mahi can weigh around 90 pounds.
Dorados can adjust their body color as dictated by their moods. Once out of the water though they take on a dull color and it is difficult enough trying to convince yourself that you caught the bright Dorado fish.
Male Dorados, often referred to as “bulls” have a unique flat forehead. They outgrow their female counterparts, the “cows”.
Anglers go for the mahi-mahi not just because they have tasty meat but because they also put on a fight when being caught. They are known to flop around the boat too.
Where and when to catch a Dorado
The primary spot for mahi-mahi is sea whose temperature is higher than 60. If you wish to specifically target the Dorado, locate any floating debris. Where you find baitfish is still the most likely place to find the predators.
How to tackle a Dorado
Use bucktails to catch a Dorado located around floating debris. A spinning rod and reel combo are advised. Dorado is frequently snared while trolling with overwhelming tackle designed to lure bigger fish, for example, Marlin. Other requirements include:
- 30 to 50-pound fused line
- 50-pound barrel swivel
- Spinning reel rated for 20 to 30 lb braided line
- 4/0 Circle hook
- 30 to 50-pound fluorocarbon leader
- 20 to 20-pound fused line
- 7-foot rod rated for 20 to 30-pound braid
- Lure weights of up to 1 oz
Techniques
Trolling is the best method. Most mahi are caught while in their pursuit of marlin. If they are found in large numbers in a certain area, an assortment of lures may be cast to them. When fired up, they’ll eat just about anything. When hooked they fly at you at very high speed. You better watch out with heavier lures.
Traditional baitfish such as mackerel will work well. Dorado has relatively small mouths but swallows some very large baits.
A good area to try out would be the Cabo San Lucas area where some world-record fish have been caught. The best time to go mahi hunting is after the rains as debris are flushed into the water.
